How this calculator works
A minute is exactly 60 seconds, so dividing seconds by 60 gives minutes and multiplying minutes by 60 gives seconds. The conversion is exact, and any decimal in the minute result is a fraction of a minute. A song that runs 3 minutes 45 seconds is 225 s; entered as 225 seconds, the page returns 3.75 minutes. The same arithmetic works for timers, intervals and elapsed-time logs.
Formula
minutes = seconds / 60. seconds = minutes x 60. One hour is 60 min or 3,600 s.
Worked example
60 s = 1 min. 90 s = 1.5 min. 30 s = 0.5 min. 300 s = 5 min. 3,600 s = 60 min. 225 s = 3.75 min. 45 s = 0.75 min.

Frequently asked questions
How do I turn 1.5 minutes into minutes and seconds?
The whole number is 1 minute. Multiply the 0.5 by 60 to get 30 seconds, so 1.5 min is 1 min 30 s. The same method works for any decimal minute value.
Why is 90 seconds 1.5 minutes and not 1 minute 90 seconds?
Seconds should not exceed 59 in a clock-style display. Carrying the extra 30 seconds into the minute column gives 1 min 30 s, which is the same as 1.5 decimal minutes.
Is a minute always 60 seconds?
In ordinary timekeeping, yes. A leap second can make a particular civil minute 61 seconds long, but elapsed-time conversion ignores leap seconds and uses the fixed 60 s definition.
Can I convert parts of a second?
Yes. Enter a decimal number of seconds, such as 0.5, and the page returns 0.00833333 minute. Both inputs accept fractions of a unit.
