How this calculator works

Tax is applied once to the price after discounts. Canadian presets use the CRA general GST/HST and PST table, checked 2026-11-01, table modified 2025-04-01. Nova Scotia uses 14% HST, effective 2025-04-01. Quebec uses 5% GST plus 9.975% QST on the same net price. Confirm the place of supply and which taxes apply to the item. Exemptions, special rates, line-item rounding and cash-payment nickel rounding are excluded.

Formula

Tax = P × r; total = P × (1+r). P is the price before tax and r is the applicable combined rate as a fraction. For separate taxes on the same net price, r is their sum; QST is not charged on the GST in this model.

Worked example

A $199.99 taxable purchase in Ontario at 13% HST has $26.00 tax and a $225.99 total after independent display rounding. A $100 purchase in Nova Scotia has $14 tax and a $114 total. In Quebec, $100 has $14.98 combined GST and QST, and a $114.98 total.

Frequently asked questions

Does a province preset apply to every purchase?

No. General rates assume all listed components apply to the same taxable base. Exempt or zero-rated items, special product rates and place-of-supply rules can change the tax. Use a custom rate after resolving applicability.

Can I calculate US sales tax?

Yes. Choose Custom rate and enter the applicable combined state and local rate. The tool does not look up addresses, tax jurisdictions or exemptions.

Why does the custom rate not change an Ontario result?

A Canadian preset uses its listed rate. Select Custom rate to use the number in the custom field, including 0% for a zero-rated purchase.
