Accessibility

Mathulate is meant to be usable by everyone. This page describes what the site does now, where it falls short, and how to tell us about a barrier.

Our commitment

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA across the site. That is a target, not a claim of perfection: accessibility is checked as the site changes, and reported barriers are treated as bugs.

Keyboard and focus

Every control and link can be reached with the keyboard. A Skip to content link is the first thing the Tab key reaches, so you can pass the header navigation in one step. Focus is always visible: the focused element gets a two-colour ring that meets the contrast rules in both themes.

Calculator inputs have visible labels and associated hints, and errors are written next to the field they belong to. Menus and expandable sections can be opened and closed from the keyboard, including the mobile All calculators panel and the footer sections.

Colour and contrast

Text meets at least 4.5 to 1 contrast and interface boundaries meet at least 3 to 1 in both light and dark themes. Colour is never the only way a state is shown: the current page, an invalid field and a chosen theme all carry text, a label or a shape as well as a colour.

These pairs are checked by automated tests with every change to the colour tokens.

Motion and theme

The site respects your device's reduced motion setting. When it is on, page transitions, reveals, the reading progress bar and the theme change all stop animating. Nothing on the page moves by itself.

A theme switch in the header toggles light and dark mode. With no choice saved, the site follows your device setting. The choice is remembered in your browser.

Plain language and layout

Pages are written in plain Canadian English, with short sections and a table of contents on longer pages. Layouts reflow to a single column on small screens, text can be enlarged with browser zoom, and tables switch to a stacked layout rather than forcing sideways scrolling.

Known limitations

  • When advertising is enabled, ads are served by third parties and their content is outside our control.
  • Linked external sources are outside our control and may have their own accessibility gaps.
  • The ad-block dialog is deliberately modal: while it is open, other page content is unavailable until you allow ads or close the dialog.
