How this calculator works
A calendar year is 365 days, or 366 in a leap year, so it has no single length. For conversions of durations, this page uses the Julian year of 365.25 days, or 31,557,600 seconds, which averages the four-year leap cycle. One such year is 365.25 x 24 = 8,766 hours. A common year of 365 days is 8,760 hours, six hours less. Because the page converts durations, a result in years is an average, and it cannot be used to find a calendar date or an age.
Formula
years = hours / 8,766. hours = years x 8,766. 1 Julian year = 365.25 days = 8,766 h = 31,557,600 s.
Worked example
8,766 h is 1 year. 17,532 h is 2 years. 1,000 h is 0.114077 years. A 2,080-hour work year is 0.237280 of a Julian year. Forty years is 350,640 h.

Frequently asked questions
Is a year 8,760 or 8,766 hours?
A common year of 365 days is 8,760 hours. A leap year of 366 days is 8,784 hours. The 8,766 figure is one quarter of the sum of a common year and a leap year, repeated, which gives the average Julian year.
Can I use this to work out an age?
No. An age depends on which calendar years and leap days fall between two dates. This page converts a duration, so use an age or date calculator for real dates.
Why does the page call the year Julian?
The Julian year is the mean year of the Julian calendar, 365.25 days, and it is the standard unit for astronomical durations. It is not the same as a calendar year, which is 365 or 366 days.
How many hours are in a year of full-time work?
About 2,080 paid hours for 40 hours a week across 52 weeks, which is 0.237280 of a Julian year of elapsed time.
