How this calculator works

Military time is the 24-hour clock written with a leading zero for the hours and no a.m. or p.m. The clock runs from 0000 at midnight through 1159 just before noon, then 1200 at noon and 2359 just before the next midnight. Regular time uses a 12-hour clock face with a.m. before noon and p.m. after noon, where 12 a.m. is midnight and 12 p.m. is noon. This page converts in both directions and also gives the colon-separated 24-hour form used on railway and airline timetables.

Formula

From military to regular: hours 0 becomes 12 a.m., hours 1 to 11 stay the same with a.m., hour 12 is 12 p.m., and hours 13 to 23 become hours minus 12 with p.m. From regular to military: 12 a.m. becomes 0, 12 p.m. stays 12, other a.m. hours stay the same, and other p.m. hours add 12.

Worked example

1430 military time is 2:30 p.m. and 14:30 in colon form. 0000 is 12:00 a.m. and 1200 is 12:00 p.m. Regular time 9:05 a.m. becomes 0905, and 11:59 p.m. becomes 2359.

Frequently asked questions

Is military time the same as 24-hour time?

In ordinary use, yes. Strict military usage also drops the colon and says hours as "fourteen thirty", while civilian 24-hour timetables often keep the colon and write 14:30. Both count the same hours.

Why does midnight become 0000 and not 2400?

Both are used. 0000 marks the start of the new day, while 2400 can mark the end of the previous one. This page uses 0000 so every hour has a value from 0 to 23.

When is 12 a.m. and when is 12 p.m.?

12 a.m. is midnight, the start of the day. 12 p.m. is noon, the middle of the day. It is easy to swap them, which is one reason 24-hour time is used in schedules.

Are seconds included?

No. The page works in whole minutes. A time with seconds keeps the same hour and minute and is rounded only if the seconds are dropped elsewhere.
