How this calculator works

An hour has 60 minutes and a minute has 60 seconds, so a duration in minutes becomes hours by dividing by 60 and becomes seconds by multiplying by 60. The decimal hours output keeps the fraction of an hour, while the hours-and-minutes output splits it into whole hours and the remaining minutes. That split is what a timesheet or a clock usually needs, because 1.5 hours is 1 hour 30 minutes and not 1 hour 50 minutes.

Formula

hours = minutes / 60. minutes = seconds / 60. seconds = hours x 3,600. Whole hours = floor(total minutes / 60) and remaining minutes = total minutes - 60 x whole hours.

Worked example

90 minutes is 1.5 hours, 5,400 seconds and 1 h 30 min. 150 minutes is 2.5 hours and 2 h 30 min. 45 minutes is 0.75 hours and 45 min, with no whole hours. 2 hours is 120 minutes and 7,200 seconds.

Frequently asked questions

Why is 1.5 hours not 1 hour 50 minutes?

The 0.5 is half of an hour, and half of 60 minutes is 30 minutes. Only the digits after a decimal point of an hour are converted by multiplying by 60, not the digits as if they were minutes.

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours for payroll?

Divide the minutes by 60. For example, 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45/60 = 7.75 decimal hours. The decimal hours row on this page gives that figure directly.

What happens to seconds beyond whole minutes?

The total seconds row keeps them. The hours-and-minutes row rounds the minutes to two decimal places, so a duration such as 90.5 seconds becomes 1.51 minutes there but stays exact in the seconds row.
