How this calculator works
These words are traditional ways of counting groups of items. A pair is two, a dozen is twelve, a baker's dozen is thirteen because bakers once added a thirteenth loaf to avoid a short weight, a score is twenty, a gross is a dozen dozens (144) and a great gross is a dozen gross (1,728). A decade is a group of ten and is unrelated to a decade of years.
Formula
items = entered value x F(group), where F is the number of items in the group: pair 2, half dozen 6, dozen 12, baker's dozen 13, score 20, gross 144, great gross 1,728 and decade 10. The value in another group is items ÷ F(that group).
Worked example
3 dozen is 36 items, 3 pairs, 1.8 scores and 0.25 gross. 2 great gross is 3,456 items, 288 dozen or 24 gross. 5 scores is 100 items or 8.333 dozen.

Frequently asked questions
Why is a baker's dozen 13?
Bakers in medieval England faced heavy penalties for selling short weight. Adding a thirteenth loaf to a dozen reduced the risk that a batch would be under weight.
Is a gross the same as a great gross?
No. A gross is 12 dozen, or 144 items. A great gross is 12 gross, or 1,728 items.
Can I enter a fraction of a dozen?
Yes. The calculator works in items, so 0.5 dozen is 6 items and 2.25 scores is 45 items. It does not round to whole groups.
