How this calculator works

Octal has eight digits, 0 through 7. Since eight is a power of two, every octal digit corresponds to exactly three binary positions. Group binary from the right, adding leading zeros to an incomplete group only for the conversion. The result represents an unsigned integer; it does not infer a permission policy or assign a signed interpretation.

Formula

Octal digit d represents a three-bit value from 000 to 111. Decimal value = sum(octal digit_i x 8^i).

Worked example

Binary 111101101 becomes groups 111, 101 and 101, so the octal result is 755. Its decimal value is 7 x 64 + 5 x 8 + 5 = 493. Octal 10 is binary 1000.

Frequently asked questions

Why are 8 and 9 rejected?

Octal uses eight digit symbols starting at zero, so the largest individual digit is 7.

Does 755 here change file permissions?

No. This tool only converts a numeric representation.

What happens to leading zeros?

They are accepted as part of the input string but removed from minimum-length results.
