How this calculator works
One million is one thousand thousands. Multiplying a million value by 1,000 gives thousands, and dividing a thousand value by 1,000 gives millions. The full number shows the digits that sit behind both words.
Formula
thousands = millions x 1,000. millions = thousands / 1,000. 1 thousand = 10^3. 1 million = 10^6.
Worked example
3 million = 3,000 thousand = 3,000,000. 12,500 thousand = 12.5 million. 0.25 million = 250 thousand.

Frequently asked questions
Is a thousand a thousandth of a million?
Yes. One thousand is 1,000 and one million is 1,000,000, so a thousand is 0.001 million. Conversely, a million is one thousand thousands.
Why write millions instead of thousands?
Millions shorten long figures and match the scale used in budgets and reports. Thousands remain useful when the values are smaller and the extra digits are informative.
How does this differ from a rounding calculator?
This page changes the named scale without discarding digits. A rounding calculator would replace the value with a nearest thousand, million or other round number, which loses information.
