How this calculator works

WHO defines total sperm number as concentration multiplied by ejaculate volume. Multiplying that total by each separately measured proportion gives separate motile, normal-form and live counts. These groups overlap; the percentages cannot be multiplied together to create a validated functional-sperm count. This page does not label a sample fertile or infertile or compare it against a single diagnostic threshold. Use laboratory measurements from a consistent sample and interpret them with the clinical history. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.

Formula

Total (million) = volume (mL) × concentration (million/mL). Each separate subgroup count = total × subgroup fraction. Volume = total/concentration; concentration = total/volume.

Worked example

At 3 mL and 20 million/mL, total count is 60 million. With 50% total motility, 4% normal forms and 60% vitality, the separate counts are 30, 2.4 and 36 million.

Frequently asked questions

Why is no combined functional count reported?

Morphology, motility and vitality overlap and are not independent probabilities. Multiplying their percentages would not measure their intersection.

Does a high count prove fertility?

No. Counts alone cannot establish fertility or pregnancy chances.

Can total motility exceed vitality?

Motile sperm are alive, so that combination is inconsistent. Check definitions and whether all values describe the same sample.
