How this calculator works

This page explicitly uses the IOM 2005 adult female equation documented by Health Canada, not a newer EER model. It estimates average requirements for healthy, normal-weight adults aged 19 or older. Lactation additions are 330 kcal/day in months 0 to 6 and 400 in months 7 to 12; the first incorporates an assumed 170 kcal/day contribution from stored energy. Partial breastfeeding, twins, illness and individual weight changes need tailored advice. Enter a professionally established baseline when the equation does not fit. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.

Formula

Baseline kcal/day = 354 - 6.91 × age + PA × (9.36 × kg + 726 × height m). Lactation addition = 330 or 400 kcal/day. Pregnancy additions = 0, 340 or 452 kcal/day by trimester.

Worked example

At age 32, 60 kg, 1.65 m and PA 1.12, baseline is 2103.52 kcal/day. Adding 330 gives 2433.52 kcal/day for the first lactation stage.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a weight-loss target?

No. It estimates energy needs under specific assumptions and should not be used to prescribe a calorie deficit during breastfeeding.

Does partial breastfeeding need the full addition?

Not necessarily. The model does not estimate milk volume or the fraction of feeds supplied by breast milk.

Why name the equation year?

Energy equations have changed over time. Naming the version makes the assumptions and coefficients reviewable.
