Arterial age calculator

Estimate MESA arterial age from an Agatston coronary calcium score and compare it with chronological age, with the original model and its limits.

Calculator

How this calculator works

The MESA model converts coronary artery calcium into an age with comparable estimated coronary risk. It was developed in adults aged 45 to 84 without clinical cardiovascular disease. Chronological age only enters the comparison, not the arterial-age equation. This is a statistical communication tool, not a measurement of biological age or a reason to order a CT scan. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.

Formula

Arterial age (years) = 39.1 + 7.25 ln(Agatston CAC + 1). ln is the natural logarithm.

Worked example

CAC 0 gives 39.1 years. CAC 100 gives about 72.56 years, or 12.56 years above a chronological age of 60.

Frequently asked questions

Why does zero calcium give 39.1 years?

That is the fitted intercept. Zero coronary calcium does not mean zero cardiovascular risk.

Does my actual age change the estimate?

It changes the displayed age difference only.

Can I use a calcium score in another unit?

Use an Agatston coronary score, not calcium mass or a volume score.
