How this calculator works
This page uses historical ATP III Framingham point tables for hard coronary heart disease: myocardial infarction or coronary death. The cited study page identifies adults 30 to 79 free of CHD, intermittent claudication and diabetes. Cholesterol and smoking points depend on age; SBP points depend on treatment and sex. Results below 1% or at least 30% are retained as bounds rather than converted to exact probabilities. It is distinct from the broader 2008 general CVD equation. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.
Formula
Total points = age + age-specific total cholesterol + age-specific smoking + HDL + treated/untreated SBP. The sex-specific ATP III table maps the integer total to 10-year hard CHD risk.
Worked example
A 50-year-old nonsmoking untreated man with TC 200, HDL 50 mg/dL and SBP 120 scores 6+3+0+0+0=9, mapped to 5%. The same female profile scores 6+4+0+0+1=11, mapped to 1%.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use this with diabetes?
This historical primary-prevention table is not intended for diabetes, which ATP III handled separately.
Why are points age-dependent?
The published cholesterol and smoking tables allocate points differently in each age group.
Is a displayed ≥30% exactly 30%?
No. It is the table's lower bound for that high-point group.
