How this calculator works
The higher systolic or diastolic category determines the result. The AHA bands are normal <120 and <80; elevated 120 to 129 and <80; stage 1 130 to 139 or 80 to 89; stage 2 at least 140 or 90. Severe readings are above 180 or above 120. The separately labelled historical 2018 ESC/ESH bands are optimal <120/<80, normal up to 129/84, high normal up to 139/89, then grades 1 (140/90), 2 (160/100) and 3 (180/110), always using the higher category. Repeated properly measured readings are needed for diagnosis; newer European guidance uses different categories. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.
Formula
Pulse pressure = SBP - DBP. Resting MAP ≈ (SBP + 2 DBP)/3. Classification uses the selected guideline cut-offs.
Worked example
120/80 mmHg falls in AHA stage 1 because of diastolic 80, but in the 2018 European normal category. 135/85 is AHA stage 1 and European high normal.

Frequently asked questions
Does one reading establish hypertension?
No. Diagnosis uses repeated measurements and a clinical assessment.
Why do the two guidelines disagree?
They label the same pressure ranges differently. This page identifies the version used.
Can I use these bands during pregnancy or for children?
No. Those settings require their own assessment and thresholds.
