How this calculator works
This is the established CHA₂DS₂-VASc score for thromboembolic risk assessment in atrial fibrillation. Age contributes once: 1 point at 65 to 74 or 2 at 75 and older. Previous stroke, TIA or systemic embolism contributes 2. The other components contribute 1 each, for a maximum of 9. Female sex modifies risk and should not be interpreted as an independent indication for treatment. This page reports points without assigning a fixed annual stroke percentage or prescribing therapy. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.
Formula
Score = heart failure + hypertension + age(0/1/2) + diabetes + 2 × prior stroke/TIA/embolism + vascular disease + female sex category.
Worked example
A 70-year-old man with hypertension and no other criteria scores 2. A woman aged 80 with prior stroke and diabetes scores 6.

Frequently asked questions
Are the two age categories added together?

Why is no annual stroke percentage shown?
Observed rates vary between cohorts and current care settings.
Is this the same as CHA₂DS₂-VA?
