Asphalt calculator

Estimate the asphalt mix needed for a uniform paving lift. Use the finished compacted thickness and the density of your specified mix.

Calculator

Use bulk density for aggregate, including its voids. Replace the cited example with your supplier value.

How this calculator works

Finished area times compacted thickness gives in-place volume. The 2400 kg/m3 starting density follows the cited asphalt supplier working estimate. Replace it with the mix-design bulk density when available; this is asphalt concrete, not pure bitumen.

Formula

A = L x W, pi x D^2 / 4, b x h / 2, or (front + back) x h / 2; Vnet = A x depth; Vorder = Vnet x (1 + waste); mass = Vorder x density; cost = tonnes x rate or Vorder x rate, plus fixed charges.

Worked example

A 10 m by 2 m strip at 0.08 m thick is 1.6 m3. At 2400 kg/m3 it needs 3.84 tonnes before an ordering allowance.

Frequently asked questions

Is the thickness loose or compacted?

Use compacted thickness with a compacted mix density. Mixing loose dimensions with compacted density will misstate the quantity.

Does this include paving labour?

No. The cost covers the entered material rate and optional fixed charges. Add equipment, preparation and labour separately.

Can I use it for cold patch?

Yes, if you replace the density with the product data and enter the intended finished depth. Bag yields may provide a better purchase estimate.
