How this calculator works
A refrigeration ton measures heat removal, not equipment mass or electrical consumption. Known cooling power converts directly. The room method uses the ENERGY STAR area bands, sunlight adjustments, extra occupants and kitchen allowance. Taller ceilings scale the table load in proportion to height above 2.4384 m as an explicit estimating assumption. The custom area method uses your design W/m2. Window and door gains are optional assessed additions; leave them zero if your load already includes them.
Formula
tons = cooling watts / 3516.852842; Btu/h = watts / 0.2930710702; custom load = floor area x entered W/m2 + separate gains.
Worked example
A measured 12 kW cooling load is 3.412 refrigeration tons. An assessed 80 W/m2 over 100 m2 gives 8 kW before separate gains.

Frequently asked questions
Is a ton the electrical demand?
No. Cooling capacity is heat removed. Electrical demand depends on the equipment efficiency and operating conditions.
Does this size central air conditioning?
The room table is intended for room units. Central systems need a building load calculation that includes glazing, infiltration, humidity and local design weather.
Why can I enter window gains?
Count alone cannot describe glazing area or solar exposure. Enter a separately assessed wattage only when it has not already been included in the main load.
