Tonnage calculator

Estimate the tonnage of a bulk material and keep metric tonnes separate from US short tons when comparing quotes.

How this calculator works

The tool multiplies order volume by bulk density. A metric tonne is 1000 kg; a US short ton is exactly 907.18474 kg. The displayed short-ton result is an explicit conversion and does not change the per-metric-tonne price field.

Formula

A = L x W, pi x D^2 / 4, b x h / 2, or (front + back) x h / 2; Vnet = A x depth; Vorder = Vnet x (1 + waste); mass = Vorder x density; cost = tonnes x rate or Vorder x rate, plus fixed charges.

Worked example

Four cubic metres at 1800 kg/m3 weigh 7200 kg, which is 7.2 metric tonnes or about 7.937 US short tons.

Frequently asked questions

Does ton mean tonne?

Not necessarily. Metric tonnes contain 1000 kg and US short tons contain 2000 lb. Confirm the supplier unit before entering a price.

How do I convert a US ton price?

Multiply dollars per short ton by 1000/907.18474 to obtain dollars per metric tonne for this price field.

Can one density cover all base materials?

No. The 1800 kg/m3 starting value comes from clean-stone supplier data. Use the density for your specific product and moisture condition.
