How this calculator works
The covered area times depth gives the loose volume, and volume times bulk density gives mass. The waste allowance covers spillage, uneven subgrade and settlement. Aggregate is sold by the ton (2000 lb) in the US and by the metric tonne in Canada, or in bulk by the cubic yard or cubic metre, so all of those totals are shown. Density is a bulk figure for the loose product, not the density of solid rock.
Formula
V = L × W × depth; m = V × (1 + waste%) × ρ; US tons = lb ÷ 2000; t = kg ÷ 1000. With ρ in lb/ft³, multiply by 16.0185 to get kg/m³.
Worked example
A 10 × 12 ft path 2 in deep at 105 lb/ft³ with 10% waste: 20.0 ft³ (0.74 yd³) and 2310 lb, about 1.16 US tons or 1.05 t.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the mass change with density?
Pea gravel, crushed stone and recycled aggregate pack differently. Ask the quarry for the bulk density of the exact product; the default 105 lb/ft³ is typical loose gravel.
Is a US ton the same as a tonne?
No. A US short ton is 2000 lb (907 kg); a metric tonne is 1000 kg. Both totals are shown so the order matches the supplier scale.
Should I order extra?
The waste allowance already adds 10% by default. Gravel compacts and some is lost to soft spots, so a small surplus is cheaper than a second delivery charge.
