Dog quality of life calculator

Record how your dog is functioning today and bring the pattern to your veterinarian. This simple observation tally is not a validated clinical scale and must not determine treatment or euthanasia.

Discuss pain, breathing, appetite, hydration and good versus difficult days with your veterinarian. Severe pain, breathing trouble, collapse or inability to urinate needs urgent veterinary care. A high tally cannot cancel a serious concern.

How this calculator works

Each observation receives zero, one or two points solely to organize a daily record. The total has no clinical threshold. Record specific changes, pain behaviours and activities your dog enjoys, and compare observations over time with your veterinary team. This tool draws on the topics in veterinary quality-of-life discussions, but does not reproduce or validate a published scale.

Formula

Observation tally = sum of six responses scored 0, 1 or 2. Concern count = number of responses below 2. Neither value predicts suffering or indicates when life should end.

Worked example

Six usual-function responses total 12. If mobility, toileting and enjoyment are severely impaired, with the other three reduced, the tally is 3 and all six areas need discussion. The individual observations matter more than the sum.

Frequently asked questions

Does a high score mean my dog is comfortable?

No. A single major concern, especially pain or breathing difficulty, matters regardless of the total.

Is there a euthanasia cutoff?

No. Decisions require an individual veterinary assessment and discussion of comfort, prognosis, care options and family circumstances.

How often should I record observations?

Use a consistent time and note changes and good or difficult days. Ask your veterinary team what monitoring interval suits your dog.
