Dog food calculator

Use life stage and body weight to estimate resting energy and a starting daily allowance. Enter calories per serving from the package, using the same serving unit throughout. Monitor body condition with your veterinarian.

Calculator

For example kcal/cup, kcal/can or kcal per weighed serving. The output uses that same serving.

How this calculator works

Resting energy describes baseline needs, not the entire daily intake. A life-stage multiplier estimates daily needs, then package energy converts this into servings. The same calories can represent very different food volumes. The inverse body-weight calculation only reconstructs the equation; it does not identify an ideal weight. Working dogs, seniors, pregnancy, illness and weight-change plans require an individual factor.

Formula

RER (kcal/day) = 70 × body weight in kg^0.75. Daily energy = RER × factor. Daily servings = daily kcal / kcal per serving. Servings per meal = daily servings / meals.

Worked example

At 16 kg, RER is 70 × 8 = 560 kcal/day. A neutered adult factor of 1.6 gives 896 kcal/day. With 448 kcal per serving, that is 2 servings daily or 1 at each of two meals.

Frequently asked questions

Are cups the same for every food?

No. Use the calories per cup or can for your exact product. Weighing food is often more repeatable than scooping.

Do treats count?

Yes. Treats and table food contribute to the same daily energy intake. Review the complete diet with your veterinarian.

Can I use a generic weight-loss factor?

Weight-loss plans need an assessed ideal weight, suitable diet and monitoring. Enter a factor only when your veterinarian has supplied it.
