Dog nutrition calculator

Plan an adult dog's energy intake and food supply, or estimate the energy density of prepared food. These are starting estimates for healthy adults. Adjust feeding with your veterinarian using weight and body condition.

How this calculator works

Choose an adult activity group to estimate daily metabolisable energy. Working dogs receive a range. Portion mode divides by the package energy density. Analysis mode uses the four-step prediction for prepared dog food with all nutrients on the same as-fed basis. Guaranteed minima and maxima are not an exact analysis. High-fibre foods can fall outside the useful prediction range.

Formula

Daily kcal = activity factor × kg^0.75; factors 95, 110, 125 or 150 to 175. Food kg = kcal / kcal per kg. NFE = dry matter - protein - fat - fibre - ash. GE = 5.7P + 9.4F + 4.1(NFE + fibre). Digestibility = (91.2 - 1.43 × fibre percent of dry matter)/100. ME per 100 g = GE × digestibility - 1.04P.

Worked example

At 16 kg, metabolic weight is 8. Low activity gives 95 × 8 = 760 kcal/day. Food providing 4,000 kcal/kg supplies this in 190 g/day, or 1.33 kg over seven days.

Frequently asked questions

Does this apply to puppies or pregnancy?

No. Growth and reproduction need a separate feeding assessment.

Where do I find food energy?

Prefer the manufacturer's kcal/kg as-fed value. Analysis mode is a prediction when measured energy is unavailable.

Can I reverse the energy equation?

Weight mode calculates the mathematical weight implied by a calorie amount. It is not a target-weight recommendation.
