Dog life expectancy calculator

Look up a published population survival estimate by breed. A median describes a group, not how long your dog will live. The result is not a countdown and does not incorporate current age or health.

What the estimate means
UK study population, McMillan et al. 2024. Confidence limits describe uncertainty in the group median; they are not a range for an individual lifespan. A dog can live much shorter or longer.

How this calculator works

This lookup uses the study's survival estimates, which account for dogs still alive when records were collected. Select a breed or an aggregate group. The confidence interval concerns the estimated median, not the spread of ages at death. Regional care, sampling and individual health limit how well this UK result transfers to another dog.

Formula

Median survival is the age at which the estimated population survival curve reaches 50%. Values are looked up from the study, not calculated by subtracting current age from a breed average.

Worked example

The study reports a 13.1-year median for Labrador Retrievers and 12.0 years for the crossbred group. Neither value predicts an individual age at death.

Frequently asked questions

Can I subtract my dog's age to find years left?

No. Remaining-life estimates require survival conditional on current age and other information. A population median does not supply that.

Do the confidence limits contain most lifespans?

No. They describe statistical uncertainty in the estimated group median, not an individual prediction interval. Some limits were not estimable and are shown as not reported.

What if the breed is not listed?

The study did not estimate every breed. Aggregate groups provide context, but averaging breed medians does not estimate an individual lifespan.
