How this calculator works
This is a scoring aid for the 28-point POMA with balance maximum 16 and gait maximum 12. Perform the examination according to the referenced instructions with a trained assessor guarding the patient. The nudge and eyes-closed tasks can provoke a fall and should not be attempted alone. Two turning ratings and four foot-length/clearance ratings are counted separately. Other Tinetti versions have different items; do not combine their ratings. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.
Formula
Total POMA = balance subtotal + gait subtotal. Balance uses the first ten ratings and gait the remaining ten.
Worked example
All best ratings yield balance 16 plus gait 12, total 28. All minimum ratings yield 0.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use the number on its own?
No. A trained assessor must apply the referenced definitions and interpret the complete assessment.
Does a zero mean that nothing is wrong?
No. It means no points under this particular instrument, which covers only its listed domains.
Can I compare different versions?
Only with care. Changing item definitions or weights can change what a score means.
