How this calculator works
The ten task scores describe actual performance with usual aids, rather than potential ability. The total runs from 0 to 100. A score of 100 covers basic personal activities but does not establish the ability to cook, shop or live alone. Use the original assessment guidance for supervision, accidents and transfers. No dependence category is assigned because later classifications vary. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.
Formula
BI = sum of ten item points. The 20-point version is the same numerical scale divided by five.
Worked example
Independent feeding (10), grooming (5) and bathing (5), with all other items at zero, gives 20/100.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use the number on its own?
No. A trained assessor must apply the referenced definitions and interpret the complete assessment.
Does a zero mean that nothing is wrong?
No. It means no points under this particular instrument, which covers only its listed domains.
Can I compare different versions?
Only with care. Changing item definitions or weights can change what a score means.
