How this calculator works

The 2024 Adult Compendium defines one MET as approximately 1 kcal/kg/hour. This tool keeps walking and active play as separate periods, using the published MET values. Gross energy includes the resting energy that would be spent during the same time; the net result subtracts a 1-MET baseline. Count only active time and do not count the same minutes twice. Values are population averages for adults, not individual calorimetry or a prediction of weight change. Dog size and a game name do not establish an intensity, so the form asks for effort instead. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.

Formula

Gross kcal = body weight(kg) × [walking MET × walking hours + play MET × play hours]. Net kcal above rest = gross kcal - weight × total active hours. 1 kcal = 4184 J.

Worked example

A 70 kg adult walking a dog for 30 minutes at 3 MET uses an estimated 105 kcal gross and 70 kcal above rest. Another 15 minutes of moderate moving play at 4 MET adds 70 kcal gross.

Frequently asked questions

Does a larger dog automatically burn more energy?

The compendium does not supply a dog-size coefficient. Use the activity and effort actually performed.

Should rest breaks be included?

Only active periods belong in the active-time fields. A stop to chat is not the same activity intensity as moving play.

Why are gross and net calories different?

Gross energy includes resting metabolism during those minutes. Net energy subtracts a standard 1-MET resting estimate.
