Army body composition calculator

Army Directive 2026-13 uses waist-to-height ratio, not a body-fat percentage. Choose current screening or the retired 2023 single-site equation for historical use.

Calculator

For feet, enter decimal feet: 5 ft 6 in is 5.5 ft.

Use the official measurement procedure. Enter waist and height in any offered units.

Waist-to-height ratio before truncation
0.500000
Recorded ratio: three decimal places, truncated
0.500
Standard comparison

How this calculator works

The current mode follows Army Directive 2026-13: divide navel-level waist by height in the same units, truncate after three decimal places and compare with 0.550. A recorded 0.549 meets the initial threshold; 0.550 does not. A failed initial screen requires official confirmation, and this tool cannot decide enrolment or exemptions. Historical mode implements the single-site equations introduced in 2023 and documented in ALARACT 032/2025. Transfer the already recorded whole-pound weight and half-inch averaged abdomen from the old form. No historical pass/fail body-fat limits are applied. The old neck/waist/hip method is not the current Army standard. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.

Formula

2026 WHtR = waist / height; recorded ratio = floor(1000 x WHtR)/1000; threshold is strictly below 0.550. Historical male %BF = -26.97 - 0.12 x pounds + 1.99 x abdomen in inches. Historical female %BF = -9.15 - 0.015 x pounds + 1.27 x abdomen in inches.

Worked example

A 35 in waist and 70 in height give 0.500, meeting the initial 2026 screening threshold. A 38.5 in waist at 70 in gives 0.550, which does not. The official historical male example, 210 lb and 35 in abdomen, gives 17.48%, rounded to 17%.

Frequently asked questions

Why does an Army body-fat page show waist-to-height ratio?

The Army replaced its earlier assessments with WHtR in 2026. A current result should not pretend that a retired percentage equation still controls screening.

Do age and sex change the current threshold?

The published 2026 WHtR threshold is the same. Official medical exemptions and confirmation procedures still apply.

Can I enter raw measurements in historical mode?

Use the final recorded values from the old procedure. That procedure used repeated measurements and specific rounding rules; this page does not silently approximate them.
