How this calculator works
ABSI adjusts waist size for overall body size. The z-score compares it with the smoothed age and sex values in the original Table S1. This page accepts completed ages 18 through 85 and does not interpolate or extrapolate. A population comparison cannot predict an individual lifespan. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.
Formula
BMI = W/H²; ABSI = waist/(BMI^(2/3) x sqrt(H)), with W in kg and lengths in m. z = (ABSI - reference mean)/reference SD.
Worked example
At 81 kg, 1.80 m and a 0.90 m waist, BMI is 25 and ABSI is approximately 0.07846. For a 40-year-old male, compare that value with Table S1 rather than a universal cutoff.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I measure my waist?
Use a level tape at the top of the hip bone, without compressing the skin. Use the same site each time.
What does a positive z-score mean?
The ABSI is above the reference mean for that age and model sex. It does not diagnose disease.
Can children use this page?
No. The mortality analysis was in adults; this page restricts the reference lookup to adult ages.
