How this calculator works
BAI is an empirical hip-to-height index proposed by Bergman and colleagues. It is reported on a percentage-like scale but is not a direct measurement of body fat. The development populations do not establish universal accuracy for every age, ancestry or body type. Use a horizontal tape around the widest hip circumference. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.
Formula
BAI = hip(cm)/height(m)^1.5 - 18. Hip(cm) = (BAI + 18) x height^1.5. Height(m) = [hip(cm)/(BAI + 18)]^(2/3).
Worked example
With height 1.00 m and hips 50 cm, BAI is 50 - 18 = 32. At 1.60 m and hips 100 cm it is about 31.41.

Frequently asked questions
Is BAI a body fat test?
No. Agreement with measured fat varies by population and individual.
Do I need my weight?
No. This particular index uses only hip circumference and height.
Why is the hip measurement important?
Changing the tape location changes the index. Measure around the fullest part of the hips without tightening the tape.
