How this calculator works

Tenderness and leukocytosis carry two points each; the other findings carry one. Use examination and laboratory findings from a clinician. Missing observations must be assessed before entering No. A low result cannot safely exclude appendicitis. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.

Formula

Score = migration + anorexia + nausea/vomiting + 2(tenderness) + rebound + fever + 2(leukocytosis) + left shift, with each finding coded 0 or 1.

Worked example

Tenderness, leukocytosis, nausea and fever contribute 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 6. If all eight findings are present, the total is 10.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the modified score?

No. The original 10-point score includes the differential white cell finding. The modified 9-point version omits it.

Does nausea and vomiting count twice?

No. Either or both together contribute one point.

Does the result diagnose appendicitis?

No. Persistent or worsening abdominal pain needs clinical assessment regardless of the calculated total.
