How this calculator works

For an ordinary workday, the first eight hours are straight time, the next four are time-and-a-half, and further hours are double time. If all seven days in this workweek contain work, day seven uses time-and-a-half for its first eight hours and double time thereafter. Any remaining straight-time hours beyond 40 become weekly overtime. Hours already receiving a daily premium are not counted again. The table shows the final classification. All money is USD; no exchange conversion or tax calculation is performed.

Formula

Weekly gross = regular rate x (regular hours + 1.5 x overtime hours + 2 x double-time hours). Regular rate from a gross target = target / weighted hours. General daily thresholds are 8 and 12 hours; the weekly straight-time cap is 40 hours.

Worked example

A week of 13, 8, 8, 8, 8, 0 and 0 worked hours has 40 regular hours, four at time-and-a-half and one at double time. At $20 USD per hour, pay is $800 + $120 + $40 = $960. Six eight-hour days followed by a ten-hour seventh day give 40 regular hours, 16 overtime hours and two double-time hours.

Frequently asked questions

Is the seventh day always Sunday?

No. Supply the seven days in your employer's fixed workweek. This calculator applies the seventh-day premium only when every day of that workweek has worked hours.

Are daily and weekly overtime added twice?

No. The weekly test reclassifies only remaining straight-time hours. For example, four 12-hour days have 32 regular and 16 daily overtime hours, with no additional weekly premium.

Does this cover every California work arrangement?

It covers the general rules only. Alternative workweeks, agricultural work, collective agreements, exemptions and special wage orders may require another calculation. Confirm the applicable rule and regular rate before using these figures.

Can I solve for hours or a different multiplier?

The seven-day distribution determines the legal hour classes, and the premium factors are fixed here. A gross target can recover a regular rate for a known schedule, but cannot uniquely recover seven daily totals.
