How this calculator works
Katha is a land unit used in India, Bangladesh and Nepal, and it is defined locally rather than nationally. The same word covers 720 square feet in West Bengal and Bangladesh, 1,361.25 square feet in Patna and Arrah, and about 3,644 square feet in Nepal, with other values in other districts. For that reason the page names the region beside every figure and offers a custom entry, and the result should be checked against the local deed before any money changes hands. Twenty katha make one bigha in Bihar and West Bengal, and one acre is 43,560 square feet, or about 60.5 katha of 720 square feet.
Formula
square feet = katha x square feet per katha for the chosen region. katha = square feet / square feet per katha. square metres = square feet x 0.09290304. 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft. 20 katha = 1 bigha where that convention applies.
Worked example
5 katha in West Bengal is 5 x 720 = 3,600 sq ft, or 334.45 m2. The same 5 katha in Patna is 5 x 1,361.25 = 6,806.25 sq ft, or 632.32 m2. In Nepal, 5 katha is 18,220.6 sq ft, or 1,692.75 m2. Going the other way, 1,000 sq ft is 1.38889 katha in West Bengal but only 0.734615 katha in Patna.

Frequently asked questions
Why does a katha have different values?
The unit grew out of local land measurement and was never standardised nationally. Different districts kept their own bigha and katha sizes, so the figure must be matched to the place where the land is.
How many square feet are in a katha in West Bengal?
720 square feet, which is 66.8902 m2 or 80 square yards. Bangladesh uses the same 720 square feet. One bigha is 20 katha, so 14,400 square feet in those places.
How many katha are in an acre?
It depends on the regional value. One acre is 43,560 square feet, so it is 60.5 katha of 720 square feet in West Bengal, but only 32 katha of 1,361.25 square feet in Patna.
Should I use this for a property purchase?
Use it to check a figure, not to replace a survey. Deeds, mutation records and local land offices use district conventions that a generic converter cannot know. Confirm the katha size in writing before agreeing a price.
