How this calculator works

For a rectangular parcel, area is width multiplied by length. The result is converted to acres using the exact international acre of 4,046.8564224 square metres, which is 43,560 square feet. The price estimate multiplies the number of acres by the price per acre; it is a price in Canadian dollars and does not convert currencies.

Formula

area = width x length. length = area / width. acres = area (m2) / 4,046.8564224. total price = acres x price per acre. One acre is also 4,840 square yards.

Worked example

A parcel 50 yards wide and 100 yards long has an area of 5,000 square yards. Since one acre is 4,840 square yards, the acreage is about 1.03306 acres, or 4,180.64 square metres. At $5,000 per acre the total price is about $5,165.29.

Frequently asked questions

Does the shape have to be a rectangle?

This calculator assumes a rectangle. For an irregular parcel, divide it into rectangles or triangles, calculate each part, and add the areas.

Why is one acre 4,840 square yards?

An acre was traditionally a chain by a furlong, which is 22 yards by 220 yards. Multiplying those gives exactly 4,840 square yards, or 43,560 square feet.

Is the total price a formal valuation?

No. It is the acreage multiplied by the price you enter, before fees, taxes, survey corrections or zoning effects. A formal appraisal considers comparable sales and the shape and access of the parcel.
