How this calculator works
The acre was traditionally defined as an area one chain wide and one furlong long. A chain is 22 yards and a furlong is 220 yards, so the product is 22 x 220 = 4,840 square yards. Because both the yard and the acre are fixed by the international foot, the relationship is exact. One square yard is nine square feet and 0.83612736 square metres.
Formula
acres = square yards / 4,840. square yards = acres x 4,840. square feet = square yards x 9. square metres = square yards x 0.83612736.
Worked example
4,840 square yards = 1 acre = 43,560 square feet = 4,046.8564224 m2. 10,000 square yards = 2.06611570248 acres, or about 8,361.27 m2.

Frequently asked questions
Is a yard the same as a square yard?
No. A yard is a length of 0.9144 m. A square yard is a square one yard on each side, or 0.83612736 square metres.
Why 4,840 square yards in an acre?
The traditional acre was a chain by a furlong. A chain is 22 yards and a furlong is 220 yards, so the area is 22 x 220 = 4,840 square yards by definition.
How do I convert square feet to square yards?
Divide the square feet by nine, because one yard is three feet and the area ratio is three squared. This calculator shows both units from the same input.
