How this calculator works
The are is a metric land measure of exactly 100 square metres, so a hectare is 100 ares. The international acre is defined as 43,560 square feet, and one square foot is exactly 0.09290304 square metres, which makes one acre exactly 4,046.8564224 square metres or 40.468564224 ares. The conversion is therefore exact for the international acre; older survey acres differ slightly.
Formula
ares = acres x 40.468564224. acres = ares / 40.468564224. hectares = ares / 100. square metres = ares x 100. square feet = square metres / 0.09290304.
Worked example
2 acres = 80.937128448 ares = 0.80937128448 ha = 8,093.7128448 m2. 50 ares = 0.5 ha = 5,000 m2 = 1.23552690734 acres.

Frequently asked questions
Is an are the same as an acre?
No. An are is 100 square metres, while an acre is about 4,046.86 square metres, so one acre is a little over 40 ares. The names are similar but the units are metric and imperial respectively.
Where is the are used?
The are is used in some European land records and in agriculture, although the hectare is more common for larger plots. Canada and the United States usually use acres for land.
Why does the acre have such an odd metric value?
The acre predates the metric system and was fixed as 43,560 square feet. The international foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so squaring and multiplying gives the exact metric value shown here.
