How this calculator works

Annualize monthly food and per-appointment grooming, then add yearly care and contingency savings. Setup costs are added once, even when the horizon spans many years. Use quotes for your dog's size and needs rather than a generic breed price. The horizon is a budgeting choice, not a lifespan prediction. Prices, care needs and replacement equipment can change; the calculation holds entered costs constant.

Formula

Food/year = 12 × (monthly food + treats). Grooming/year = cost per appointment × annual appointments. Recurring/year = medical + food + grooming + insurance + other care + reserve. First year = recurring + setup. Horizon budget = years × recurring + setup.

Worked example

Annual vaccinations of $100, food at $50/month, four $20 grooming visits and an $80 crate give $780 recurring per year, $860 in year one and $1,640 over two years.

Frequently asked questions

Are these local price estimates?

No. Enter actual Canadian-dollar quotes. Zero defaults mean an unfilled item contributes nothing, so check that every needed item is covered.

Is the contingency reserve an expense?

It is money set aside for uncertainty. It is included in the budget total but may remain savings if not needed.

Does the multi-year total include inflation?

No. It holds costs constant and includes setup once. Revisit the budget as prices, equipment and care needs change.
