How this calculator works
The cutting allowance is added to net lawn area, then divided by one roll area and rounded up. Use the installed coverage specified by the sod supplier, since roll formats differ. The default 5% is an editable purchasing allowance and is not an agronomic rate. Material cost excludes site preparation, delivery, installation and watering.
Formula
Order area = lawn area × (1 + allowance). Rolls = ceiling(order area/(roll length × roll width)). Cost = rolls × price per roll.
Worked example
A 100 m2 lawn with a 10% allowance requires 110 m2. At 2 m × 0.5 m per roll, buy 110 rolls. A price of $5 per roll gives $550.

Frequently asked questions
Is cutting allowance the same as installation overlap?
No. Sod is laid with edges meeting. The allowance accounts for trimming and unusable pieces.
How much extra should I buy?
Use a supplier estimate based on bed shape and installation plan. Curves and narrow pieces can require more offcuts.
Does the tool include pallet rounding?
It rounds individual rolls. If sold only by full pallet, round the roll count to the supplier pallet size.
