How this calculator works
Volume is horizontal area times uniform layer depth. Mass is volume times bulk density. Loose, wet and compacted soil have different densities; the 1500 kg/m3 default is only an editable arithmetic example. This calculator does not estimate compaction or settlement. Split a sloping or irregular site into sections with representative depths and add their volumes.
Formula
Volume = area × depth. Mass = volume × bulk density. Depth = volume/area. Area = volume/depth. Bags = ceiling(volume/bag volume). Cost uses the selected CAD per m3, kg or bag basis.
Worked example
A 100 m2 area filled 10 cm deep needs 10 m3. At 1500 kg/m3 the order weighs 15000 kg. A quote of $0.02/kg gives a material cost of $300.

Frequently asked questions
Which density should I use?
Ask the supplier for bulk density at delivery moisture and packing. Do not substitute mineral particle density.
Does the result include settling?
No. Enter the intended loose thickness or add an allowance based on the supplier and the intended compaction.
Can I work backward from a truckload?
Yes. Choose depth from volume, area from volume, or volume from mass. Density mode derives density from a measured mass and volume.
