How this calculator works
The age is divided by the chosen animal lifespan and multiplied by the chosen human lifespan. Merck reports 1 to 2 years for hamsters, while exceptional longevity occurs. The 2-year default is an explicit illustration; the 80-year human reference is also a changeable comparison value, not a current population statistic. Early maturation and later aging are not linear, so the ratio must not guide care.
Formula
Illustrative human age = animal age / chosen animal lifespan × chosen human lifespan. Fraction of assumed lifespan = age/lifespan. Reverse mode rearranges the same proportion.
Worked example
With a two-year animal assumption and an 80-year human assumption, a one-year-old hamster maps to 40 illustrative years. A six-month-old maps to 20.

Frequently asked questions
Is this a scientific biological-age measurement?
No. It is a transparent lifespan-ratio illustration. There is no single multiplier that equates all stages of development.
Does passing the chosen lifespan mean the animal is overdue?
No. A chosen reference lifespan is not a maximum or a prognosis. Values over 100% remain arithmetic comparisons.
Can I use this to choose food or veterinary checks?
Use species-specific care and veterinary advice. Age comparisons do not assess health, nutrition or an individual animal's needs.
