Rabbit cage size calculator

Plan a connected living and exercise space for a compatible pair of medium rabbits. RSPCA and RWAF recommend at least 3 m by 2 m by 1 m; larger rabbits and groups need more space.

Calculator

Ensure rabbits can turn, stretch and pass one another. This measurement does not replace the minimum enclosure width.

Dimension comparison
Meets the entered dimensional comparison only. Check shelter, access, exercise, enrichment and rabbit-specific needs.

How this calculator works

The comparison uses the 3 m length, 2 m width and 1 m height baseline for a pair of medium rabbits, then allows extra length for three entered hops and extra height for the taller rabbit standing upright. Rotating the floor rectangle is allowed. Shelves do not substitute for continuous floor space. A small rabbit is not assigned a smaller baseline. Custom animal measurements help enlarge the plan, not reduce the welfare recommendation.

Formula

Footprint = length × width. Missing length = area/width; missing width = area/length. Planned long side >= max(3 m, 3 × hop distance). Short side >= 2 m. Height >= max(1 m, entered standing height).

Worked example

A 3 m by 2 m enclosure with 1 m height has a 6 m2 footprint and meets the base dimensional comparison. A 4 m by 1.5 m enclosure also has 6 m2 but fails the short-side comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Is a small hutch enough if rabbits get occasional exercise?

The cited recommendation is for a connected living and exercise area with continual access. A hutch alone does not provide that space.

Can I house giant rabbits using these minimums?

Larger rabbits and larger groups need more room. Get an individual housing plan rather than assuming the pair-of-medium-rabbits baseline is sufficient.

Why check dimensions separately from area?

A long narrow space can have the same area while restricting movement. Height, width and continuous usable length all matter.
