Dog onion toxicity calculator

Call your veterinarian or an animal poison control line now. Do not wait for symptoms. Do not induce vomiting or give home treatments unless a veterinarian directs you. Any suspected onion exposure needs professional advice. This calculator never establishes a safe amount, including for cooked onion or powder.

Calculator

Use onion mass, not the entire meal. For powder or an unknown recipe, call without waiting for an estimate.

This is an exposure summary, not a toxicity threshold. Raw, cooked, dried and powdered Allium products can damage red blood cells. Repeated exposures and concentrated products need individual assessment.

How this calculator works

Divide the estimated onion mass by body weight to give the clinician a consistent exposure measure. Do not compare powders gram-for-gram with fresh onions. Onion-associated red blood cell damage can become apparent days later, so a normal appearance now is not reassuring. No low-risk band or treatment dose is calculated.

Formula

Exposure (g/kg) = onion mass in grams / dog mass in kilograms. Body-mass fraction = onion kg / dog kg.

Worked example

For 100 g of onion eaten by a 10 kg dog, the exposure summary is 10 g/kg, equal to 1% of body mass. This number is not a safety limit. Contact veterinary help now.

Frequently asked questions

Does cooking remove the concern?

No. Tell your veterinarian whether the product was raw, cooked, dried or powdered.

Can I use this for garlic or onion powder?

The arithmetic can record mass, but it cannot translate potency. Give the exact ingredient and packaging to animal poison control.

What if I entered zero because the amount is unknown?

Zero entered is not proof of no exposure. Call and explain what may have been eaten; do not wait for an exact measurement.
