How this calculator works
Average pressure is the normal force spread over a loaded area. Enter the force perpendicular to the surface, rather than a tangential friction force. This relationship applies to a uniform pressure or the average of a nonuniform distribution. It does not add atmospheric pressure automatically: force and pressure must refer to the same pressure difference.
Formula
P = F/A; F = PA; A = F/P. One pascal is one newton per square metre.
Worked example
A 200 N normal force spread across 0.5 m² gives 400 Pa. A force of 600 N at 2000 Pa requires 0.3 m².

Frequently asked questions
Is this absolute or gauge pressure?
It can represent either if the force uses the matching reference. A net force across a surface corresponds to the pressure difference across it.
Why must area be positive?
Dividing by zero area gives no finite average pressure, and a negative geometric area is not physical.
Does changing units change the physical pressure?
No. The quantity stays the same; only its numerical representation changes.
