How this calculator works
The inductor stores energy during the switch-on interval and releases it into a higher output voltage when the switch opens. Inductor volt-second balance fixes the ideal conversion ratio. Ripple is the peak-to-peak change in inductor current over one switching cycle. These calculations assume continuous conduction, fixed frequency and negligible losses.
Formula
Vo = Vi/(1-D); D = 1 - Vi/Vo; L = Vi D/(fs deltaI).
Worked example
Boosting 12 V to 24 V needs D = 0.5. At 100 kHz and a 0.2 A ripple target, L = 0.0003 H, or 300 microhenries.

Frequently asked questions
Does this include efficiency?
No. It uses an ideal power stage. Real semiconductor drops, winding resistance and switching losses alter the required duty cycle.
What does ripple current mean?
The entered ripple is the difference between maximum and minimum inductor current within one switching cycle.
Can this model discontinuous conduction?
No. If current reaches zero for part of the cycle, conversion ratio also depends on the load. Check the conduction mode and controller limits separately.
