How this calculator works
Choose the sign of the entire mixed number, then enter non-negative whole and numerator magnitudes with a positive denominator. Multiply the whole part by the denominator and add the numerator. Apply the selected sign, then reduce the resulting fraction. A separate sign selector also represents negative proper fractions, whose whole part is zero.
Formula
signed numerator = sign times (whole times denominator + numerator). Divide both parts by their gcd to reduce.
Worked example
3 2/5 becomes (3 times 5 + 2)/5 = 17/5. Selecting negative with whole 0, numerator 1 and denominator 2 gives -1/2.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I put a negative sign?
Use the sign selector and enter positive magnitudes. The selected sign applies to both the whole and fractional parts.
Must the fractional numerator be smaller than the denominator?
No. A larger numerator is accepted, and the mixed-number output is normalised.
Why show an unreduced numerator?
It makes the conversion step visible before common factors are cancelled.
