How this calculator works
First turn mixed numbers into improper fractions. Division by a non-zero fraction multiplies by that fraction's reciprocal. The numerator and denominator are then reduced by their greatest common divisor. Exact integer arithmetic preserves the answer without decimal rounding. A zero dividend is valid; a zero divisor is not.
Formula
(a/b) / (c/d) = (a/b)(d/c) = ad/(bc), with b,d,c non-zero.
Worked example
(2/3)/(4/5) = (2/3)(5/4) = 10/12 = 5/6. Dividing -1 1/2 by 3/4 gives -2.

Frequently asked questions
Which fraction do I flip?
Reverse only the divisor, the second value. Keep the dividend as entered.
Can I divide by a whole number?
Yes. A whole number k is the fraction k/1, so its reciprocal is 1/k when k is non-zero.
Can the answer be a whole number?
Yes. A reduced denominator of one is displayed as an integer, such as -2.
