How this calculator works
Reduce the fraction and make its denominator positive, then divide the numerator magnitude by the denominator. The quotient is the whole-number magnitude and the remainder is the fractional numerator. Apply the original sign to the entire mixed value. Proper fractions and exact integers are also accepted. Integer inputs must be within JavaScript's safe integer range.
Formula
|n| = qd + r with 0 <= r < d, after reduction to d > 0. Mixed value = sign(n) times (q + r/d).
Worked example
17/5 gives quotient 3 and remainder 2, so the result is 3 2/5. The fraction -7/3 becomes -2 1/3, meaning -(2 + 1/3).

Frequently asked questions
What if the fraction is already proper?
The result stays a proper fraction. The whole-part readout is zero, with a minus sign retained when appropriate.
What happens when the remainder is zero?
The answer is displayed as an integer, without an unnecessary fractional part.
Can the denominator be negative?
Yes. Its sign is transferred to the numerator before conversion.
