How this calculator works
Stroke volume is forward blood volume per beat. Dividing cardiac output by heart rate requires matching time units. Body size is used only to produce the indexed outputs, using Mosteller BSA. In valve regurgitation, forward output may differ from the total volume ejected by the ventricle. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.
Formula
SV(mL/beat) = 1000 × CO(L/min) / HR. SVI = SV/BSA; CI = CO/BSA; BSA = √[height(cm) × weight(kg)/3600].
Worked example
At 6 L/min and 75 beats/min, SV is 80 mL. With BSA 2 m², SVI is 40 mL/beat/m² and CI is 3 L/min/m².

Frequently asked questions
Why include height and weight?
They calculate surface area for SVI and CI, not the unindexed stroke volume.
Can heart rate be zero?
No. This calculation requires a positive heart rate and flow.
Does this measure ventricular size?
No. Volume-based imaging methods use end-diastolic and end-systolic measurements instead.
