How this calculator works
MCV estimates average red cell volume, MCH the hemoglobin mass per cell, and MCHC hemoglobin concentration inside the packed red cells. The numerical factors follow from the input units. A red cell count of 5 x 10^12/L equals 5 million cells/µL. The equations do not depend on sex; reference intervals may depend on age, laboratory and other factors, so none is imposed here. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.
Formula
With Hct in percent, Hb in g/dL and RBC in millions/µL: MCV (fL) = 10 x Hct / RBC; MCH (pg) = 10 x Hb / RBC; MCHC (g/dL) = 100 x Hb / Hct.
Worked example
Hb 15 g/dL, Hct 45% and RBC 5 give MCV 90 fL, MCH 30 pg and MCHC 33.3333 g/dL. Hb 12, Hct 36% and RBC 4 give the same indices.

Frequently asked questions
Why must RBC and hematocrit be positive?
Both occur in denominators. A zero value makes at least one index undefined.
Does the formula need sex?
No. Sex may affect reference intervals but does not enter these three equations.
Are calculated indices a diagnosis?
No. Indices describe average red cell properties; a clinician interprets them with the full blood count and smear.
