How this calculator works
Padua is a risk-assessment model for venous thromboembolism in hospitalized medical patients. Active cancer, previous VTE, reduced mobility and known thrombophilia each add 3; recent trauma/surgery adds 2; the remaining six factors add 1 each. The published high-risk threshold is 4. Count combined items only once. The score does not diagnose an existing clot or assess bleeding risk. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.
Formula
Padua = 3(cancer + previous VTE + immobility + thrombophilia) + 2(recent trauma/surgery) + age + failure + acute MI/stroke + infection/rheumatologic disease + obesity + hormones.
Worked example
Reduced mobility alone gives 3 points, below the high-risk threshold. Adding age 70 or older gives 4 points.

Frequently asked questions
Do heart failure and respiratory failure count twice?
No. They form one one-point item.
Is superficial thrombosis prior VTE here?
No. The prior-VTE item excludes superficial vein thrombosis.
Does high risk automatically mean anticoagulation?
No. Bleeding risk, contraindications and the full clinical situation also matter.
