How this calculator works
The ASE linear cube equation estimates LV mass from end-diastolic cavity diameter and wall thicknesses measured using the recommended convention. It assumes regular ventricular geometry. Index mass to BSA; upper reference limits for the linear method are 95 g/m² for women and 115 g/m² for men. Relative wall thickness above 0.42 distinguishes concentric geometry. These reference limits do not apply to every imaging method or body-size group. The result is an estimate for information only and is not medical advice.
Formula
Mass(g) = 0.8 × 1.04[(LVIDd + IVSd + PWd)³ - LVIDd³] + 0.6, lengths in cm. LVMI = mass/BSA. RWT = 2PWd/LVIDd.
Worked example
LVIDd 5 cm with septum and posterior wall each 1 cm gives mass 181.976 g. At BSA 2 m², LVMI is 90.988 g/m² and RWT is 0.40.

Frequently asked questions
Can MRI mass use these thresholds?
No. These are the ASE linear echocardiographic method reference limits.
Why is body surface area included?
It normalizes mass for body size; obesity can still complicate interpretation.
Is a geometry category a diagnosis?
No. Measurement quality, loading and clinical findings must be considered.
